Big Bang 2010 National Science and Engineering Competition

Hutchesons' has a long tradition of success in the national CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) competition and 2010 is no different.  For the first time, Hutchesons' had a representative in each of the CREST sections, Bronze, Silver and Gold, representing Scotland, following wins in the regional finals. The six pupils went on to win prestigious prizes at the 2010 event, which took place in Manchester.

Bronze Category

Rector and Scott GriffithsScott Griffiths' project on the biology of maggots won a Highly Commended Prize -  a personal cheque for £100 and medal and certificate. In addition, Scott received a second special medal and certificate for his communication skills.






Big Bang 2010Silver Category

Timothy Heelis (left), Duncan McColl and Michael Williams presented their project on "Are you Telling the Truth", a study into lie detection. This received a highly commended prize, a medal, certificates and £125.


Douglas OatesGold Category

Douglas Oates worked on the antibacterial properties of manuka honey which lifted a top individual prize of £1000, medal and certificate as well an opportunity for a "themed experience" in a zoo or other biological context.

More than 17,000 visitors attended the Competition over the three days and some 230 different projects were displayed at a very high standard.

"This was a truly remarkable performance from these talented young scientists," says Biology teacher John Di Mambro, who accompanied the pupils to Manchester, "and all of them intend to make Science their career in some form or other."
