On Wednesday 17 March 2010, Hutchesons' Grammar School gathered in Glasgow Cathedral to commemorate the founding of the School by the brothers George and Thomas Hutcheson in 1641.
Staff, senior pupils, and invited guests joined dignitaries representing all aspects of the City of Glasgow to celebrate the School’s long and illustrious history which spans almost four centuries and which is so entwined with that of the city itself.
The commemoration address was given by Andrew McKie (C1986) journalist, writer and broadcaster, and son of John and Lorna McKie, former Head of Classics and Depute Rector of the Primary School respectively. Andrew McKie, a past winner of numerous international debating competitions, held his young audience spellbound as he spoke eloquently about the importance of individual identity and the value of a Hutchesons’ education.
Founders’ Day presents a valuable opportunity for the School to show
appreciation to its many benefactors, Governors, staff, former pupils and current pupils for their continuing commitment to the promotion of academic excellence.
