Cyclist and piper Gordon Casely (C1961) achieved a double in both interests when in a cycling tour in March across Jordan from Amman to Aqaba, he reached the Dead Sea by bike, at 1200 feet below sea level, the lowest point on the planet.
He marked the occasion by playing Scotland The Brave on his bagpipe chanter, thus completing a challenge begun in 2006. On that occasion, he cycled through Tibet to reach 18,000 feet on the north side of Mount Everest to play Scotland The Brave on the same chanter at possibly the highest altitude at which the tune has ever been heard.
