Hutchie Teddy Bears on City/Island Exchange

Katie Morag Project 2010

From January to April 2010, the three Primary 2 classes listened to and learned about the popular "Katie Morag" stories written by Mairi Hedderwick, culminating in an 'island afternoon' to which the pupils invited their grannies. In conjunction with this the teachers each got in touch with a primary school situated on a Scottish island. Two of the schools were on Shetland, the other on the Orkney island of Rousay.

Katie Morag Project 2010The children then visited 'Build-A-Bear' in Braehead and created a teddy to be sent to the island school (left, on the way to the post office!). Three island teddies then arrived at Hutchesons'. Each child in the class was encouraged to take the bear home and do something specifically 'city-related' with the bear - activities included visiting Kelvingrove, the dry ski slope and travelling on the underground. These trips were then recorded in a class journal or blog and sent via email to the island school. The island school sent emails back of the Hutchesons' teddies doing something 'island- related'. The whole project was designed to help the children compare features of island and city life.

Katie Morag Project 2010To tie in with the Katie Morag theme, the Primary Two active learning area was turned into 'Struay Street'. Each class took responsibility for creating a shop each. The result being one gardening centre, one sweet shop and a post office. This gave the children the chance to work with money and keep their own shop well stocked - a valuable exercise for all involved. At the grand opening, Mrs Hatfield wore a fancy hat and cut the ribbon!
