Buzzing about on 'BeeDay'

S2 BeeDayBee populations are in severe decline all over the world, but beekeepers and scientists are unsure why. BeeDay at Hutchesons' on 9 June was the result of a conversation between Manjit Jheeta, Head of Biology, and Mary-Teresa Fyfe, Head of Maths, about the plight of the bumblebee and the potential problems for the planet's eco system if the bumblebee population continues to dwindle; bees pollinate one-third of the food we eat!

Staff from across the school joined in the discussion which culminated in an afternoon of activity for S2 pupils at Beaton Road which covered issues as diverse as beekeeping, Fairtrade, the Fibonacci Sequence, flight, geometry and music (Rimsky-Korsakov's ‘The Flight of the Bumblebee' played on mass guitars).
