International Update

German Consul visits Hutchesons'

On Friday 12 June Herr Wolfgang Mössenger, Consul General for Germany, visited Hutchesons' to learn about our partnership with the Hans Sachs Gymnasium. Herr Mössenger, himself a qualified languages teacher, spent some time at the Primary School, where he observed Mrs Irene Davis teaching a Primary 2 class some new German words with the aid of SuperBär.

Pam Taylor (Modern Languages) and Wolfgang MoessingerFollowing a guided tour of the Secondary School, Herr Mössenger had time to chat to Dr Jean McDougall, née Roberts (C1940) about languages and her travels in Germany. Over lunch he met visiting pupils and staff from Hutchesons' German partner school, the Hans Sachs Gymnasium, Nürnberg, as well as teaching staff involved in the Comenius Project and Bee Day. Herr Mössenger stressed the importance of pupils continuing to learn about German culture through the Comenius project and hoped our ongoing partnership with Nurnberg would foster a life-long interest in his country.

Australian Exchange 2010

Australian Exchange with Goulburn Valley High SchoolFor the third year running pupils from Hutchesons' will be spending their summer holidays in school - at the other end of the world and in the winter! Lucy McKell and Robyn Catherwood, both in S4, fly to Melbourne to start a five-week exchange at Goulburn Valley Grammar School in Shepparton, Victoria. The girls are looking forward to the adventure; Robyn will be staying on a large sheep farm and Lucy in Shepparton itself.

"Our pupils find this exchange very rewarding", says Depute Rector Jim McDougall. "It's quite a challenge as this is not a typical school trip. Lucy and Robyn will fly out unaccompanied and have to cope pretty much on their own, staying with host families and attending timetabled lessons. We find, however, that our pupils love the experience, and build up close friendships with their hosts and new classmates. This exchange certainly reinforces our core values of Resiliance and Independence"

Lucy and Robyn will report back on their time in Australia later in the year.
