Pupils from Hutchesons’ Grammar School have won the chance to see an exclusive screening of a brand new film.
Pupils and staff from Hutchesons' will fill one of the screens at Odeon at the Quay on Thursday 7 October to watch a special preview of 'Africa United'. Hutchesons’ is one of only five schools in the country to be selected for the sneak preview before the film's general release later this month.
'Africa United' is the story of three children from Rwanda and their bid to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This opportunity came through the School’s membership of the Global Student Forum, which aims to enable young people to explore development issues and their own role as “global citizens”.
Hutchie pupils attended a conference in London at the end of June called Education Beats Poverty where five schools were offered the chance to show the film ahead of its general release with ticket sales going to a charity of the school’s choosing. Hutchesons’ has decided that all the profits should go to their school charity for this year, Action for Children, which works to support the UK's most vulnerable children and young people.
Calvin Clarke, head of geography at Hutchesons’, said: “Pupils attending the GSF conference have been inspired to raise awareness of the crucial importance of every child in the world receiving a school education. They are promoting this in school and have also set a challenge to the pupils in their partner school in Nitte, south India, where pupils are encouraged to raise awareness of the importance of education within their own community and to investigate the most effective ways of increasing school attendance locally. The most successful pupils earn the chance to spend a week in Scotland as guests of Hutchesons’ Grammar School.
