Hutchesons' P7A Rugby Squad has won the St Columba's Primary Tournament for the first time in eight years!
Report by Rory Dickson [P7], Captain.
The tournament began with a close, but victorious, 16-minute match against Wellington. We got off to a good start as Ross Overdijking intercepted a pass by Wellington and shot towards the try line and scored to make it 1-0 for the rest of the match.
After winning the first game we grew in confidence for the next match against St. Aloysius. We started uphill on an uneven pitch and they put us under hard pressure as they made gains towards our try line. They went on to score a good try with one of their players. In the second half we dominated and scored a quick try after Timothy Jackson passed it out to the wing and I scored shortly after half time.
We nearly got the win when George Baird bolted past most of St Aloysius players, but unluckily didn't manage to get all the way. We were all still delighted with a draw.
There was a lot of tension as we kicked off the final against St Columba's. We pressed and pressed towards their try line until Callum Young made a very good pass to me five meters away from the try line and we took the lead.
Soon afterwards, and to our delight, David Brown pressed past the try line, he spilled the ball, but Louis Irwin managed to dive on it and scored the second try of the match.
Half-time came to an end and we set out back onto the pitch. It was a nerve-wracking second half as their tall winger went past our back line to score and make it 2-1. St Columba's kept pressing and pressing on our five metre line only 30 seconds away from full time until David Brown came in and made a bone-crunching tackle to save us.
As the final whistle blew, we all shouted with delight as we had won the St Columba's Tournament. After eight years Hutchie clawed back the title!
It was a great effort by all the team, the referees were brilliant and we are very thankful to St Columba's for hosting the tournament.
