International trip provides creative rewards for talented young visitor to Hutchesons'

Although the school’s two year Comenius project came to an end in June 2011, we are continuing to maintain a range of curricular links with Hans-Sachs-Gymnasium in Nurnberg.

FlorianFlorian Trawny, a sixth year pupil had impressed everyone with his imaginative and very skillful approach to drawing so we invited him to spend a week in the art department at Hutchesons' Grammar.

Thisprovided an opportunity to get out and about in Glasgow and record experiences of the city and its many attractions.

The drawings are all done from direct observation following visits to the Zoology department at Glasgow University, the Riverside Museum, The Glasgow print Studio and various cafes. The weather was dreich to say the least so much of the drawing had to be done indoors!

Susan Breckenridge, Head of Art

Here we share some examples of Florian's outstanding work and excerpts from a diary compiled during his stay.

Man

After a good start from the Nuremberg airport, I almost missed my connecting flight in Amsterdam because of "weather restrictions".

My arrival at very British weather in Glasgow was hearty and I felt good right away with my exchange student Michael Clark with whom I already had spent a memorable time in Nurnberg.

I was kindly integrated at the school and welcomed by all teachers, including Mr. Steve McQueen with whom I firstly visited the portfolio class and have been afterwards on location-drawing.

With so many new impressions of the first few days then it was time for a visit to the Transportation Museum at the River Clyde full of freaky old bicycles, trains and for me especially interesting concept cars designed by Zaha Hadid herself, who has also designed the amazing museum with an astonishing architecture.
