The S6 NC Drama pupils enjoyed a very successful week, staging their impressive rendition of Dancing at Lughnasa.
Eight pupils and two staff members delivered polished performances of the popular show by Brian Friel in the Drama Building at Beaton Road and they received high praise from their audience.
Set in a fictional Irish Village, Dancing at Lughnasa is a memory play, told from the perspective of Michael, who tells the story of living with his five unmarried aunts' in a cottage just outside a small village. The play explores an Ireland where tradition, religion and modernity meet head on.
Flora (S6) who starred as Maggie, said: "As I am part of the Advanced Higher Drama class this year, I was eager to participate in as much live performance as possible and the NC course offered a different type of experience from anything that's been before, as it is a full length play."
Elizabeth (S6) who played Rose Mundy said: "Next year I am hoping to study Set and Costume Design. I have loved my experience at Hutchie and the Drama Department have inspired me to carry on my passion beyond School."
This year also featured S1 pupil, Calum, who enjoyed working alongside the S6 pupils and his teachers. He added: "I was so happy to be picked for this opportunity because Drama is my favourite subject. It was a little daunting being the only S1, but I have grown in confidence throughout the rehearsals. I enjoyed learning about the Irish history and I have even managed to improve my Irish accent!"
Pupils, Flora, Catherine, Elizabeth, Calum, Beth, Andrew and Adam put on two performances of their show joined by Depute Rector (Curriculum), Mr Bagnall, who provided the voiceover of Michael and Drama Teacher, Mrs Queen, who played the role of Agnes Mundy.
The hard work and commitment from the rehearsals shone through in their individual performances, with the matinee and evening shows proving very popular.
The stage crew dressed the set to a very high standard, sourcing authentic costumes and providing fantastic sound, lighting and props for both shows.
