Niamh's winning streak

S4’s Niamh Junner is unstoppable as she karate kicks her way to the top of her sport - she's currently sitting 22nd in the world rankings.

Niamh has been competing at home and abroad and in recent months and has been adding to her medal haul.

In February she represented Scotland in the +54kg U16 category at the European Karate Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. She fought magnificently and reached the Quarter finals of the international competition which attracted competitors from 37 other countries.

She narrowly missed a chance to fight for the Bronze medal and performed well as Scotland’s only competitor in the weight category.

Earlier this month she competed for her Karate club, Shitokai Scotland at the World Harasuta Cup. Niamh won Gold in the + 54kg U16 category and also stepped up to the +59kg U18 category to win Silver.

At the weekend she competed in the Scottish International Championships in Edinburgh. Niamh was again representing her club and clinched Gold in the +54kg U16 category, took Silver in the U16 Open weight category and also won the Gold in the team event.

Next month Niamh will be juggling studying for her exams with her training programme as she prepares for her National 5 exams and the British 4 Nations tournament in Sheffield.

She hopes to be selected to represent Scotland at the World Championships in October, and if her recent performance is anything to go by she’s got more than a fighting chance of reaching that goal.

Well done Niamh!
