Pupils heading to Yale

Two S5 pupils have secured places on the highly competitive Yale Young Global Scholars programme this summer – a fantastic achievement as only one pupil from the UK was selected last year.

Gideon Green and Nicola O’Neill both applied for the prestigious two-week summer school at Yale University in Connecticut and were delighted to learn they had been selected. Gideon also secured a full scholarship to attend the US university.

Gideon applied to the programme’s Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship course and had to submit five essays, teacher references and reports from both his primary and secondary department as well as details of his co-curricular activities.

He said: “I’m really excited about going. I’m hoping to go into business eventually so that’s why I chose this course.  Last year there was only one person from the UK got on the programme which has applications from 115 different countries for 7,000 spaces.”

Nicola applied for the International Relations and Security course which she hopes will aid her future career.

She said: “I want to do medicine but I am interested in global interests so would like to work for the World Health Organisation.

“It was quite an intense application process so I am delighted to be going.”

Both pupils will spend two weeks on the university campus during the summer holiday and will make the most of the intensive learning experience.

Gideon added: “It’s 9am to 9pm every day but I think there are a couple of social events during that time – a BBQ and an awards ceremony.”

The School is very proud of their achievements.
