Former Depute Rector Sandy Strang's connection with Hutchesons' began in 1963 when he won a bursary to attend the school and after studying English and Classics at Churchill College, Cambridge, he returned to the school to take a up a teaching post in the English department.
In his 30 years with the school he rose through the ranks to Head of Department and Depute Rector. He was strict, uncompromising and highly organised - a gifted teacher who was passionate about the school.
He cared deeply for his pupils and expected nothing but the best. It was evident from the hundreds of former pupils that attended his funeral, or got in touch with the school following the sad news of his death, just what an impact Sandy had made on their lives.
Sandy's passing in 2017 shocked many in the Hutchie community but we are very proud to say that he left a very generous bequest to the school, to be used to help able young people have the opportunity to join Hutchie.
Sandy’s bursary to attend Hutchesons’ helped shape the man he became and in turn enabled him to pass on his values to the thousands of pupils who passed through his care during his teaching career.
In recognition of Sandy’s commitment as a teacher and his generosity, we are asking you to consider contributing to the Sandy Strang Bursary Fund, the aim of which is to create a Bursary in perpetuity.
To fund such a bursary requires ethical investment income from £400,000. If interest rates increase, this sum will support more children. Thanks to Sandy’s bequest we are a quarter of the way there, but we would like to fund the Sandy Strang Bursary indefinitely so numerous children can access the Hutchie education of which Sandy was immensely proud.
The School has set a £400,000 target but is hoping to go significantly beyond that to honour Sandy's commitment to his pupils. We are currently organising a gala dinner to be held in Glasgow next year and we would be delighted if former pupils booked a table to attend with classmates, family or friends. The date and venue will be finalised early in the New Year but if you would like to book your interest now, please fill in the form below and you will be put on our mailing list when the tickets are released for sale.
You can also support the Sandy Strang Bursary Fund by making a regular monthly or annual donation. The Fund will be very grateful for any regular or one-off giving amount you can make. You can donate here.
