Founded in 1641 through the vision and generosity of brothers George and Thomas Hutcheson, the School has remained true to its founding commitment to educational excellence while continually evolving to meet the needs of each new generation.
Today, Hutchesons’ is one of Scotland’s leading independent, co-educational day schools, providing an exceptional education for pupils aged 3 to 18. Our heritage provides the foundation for our future. As education continues to evolve, so too do we. From August 2027, our Primary and Secondary Schools will come together on a single purpose-designed Campus for Excellence.

George and Thomas Hutcheson were distinguished figures in seventeenth-century Glasgow, recognised for their service in law, finance and civic life. Their philanthropy transformed educational opportunity within the city and established a legacy that continues to shape Hutchesons’ today.
Before his death in 1639, George Hutcheson made provision for the creation of Hutchesons’ Hospital and a school for the education of young people. Thomas fulfilled his brother’s vision, adding further endowments and overseeing the establishment of both institutions. On 19 March 1641, just six months before his own death, Thomas laid the foundation stone of Hutchesons’ Hospital and School. The first pupils were welcomed in 1643.
Their belief in education, opportunity and service remains central to the School’s ethos almost four centuries later.
Since its foundation, Hutchesons’ has evolved alongside the city of Glasgow itself. From its origins as a charitable boys’ school, it grew into respected grammar schools for boys and girls before their amalgamation in 1976 to create the modern Hutchesons’ Grammar School.
Throughout every stage of its history, the School has embraced change while remaining steadfast in its commitment to excellence. Today, we are one of Scotland’s largest and most successful independent schools, combining a rich heritage with an innovative approach to teaching, learning and pupil wellbeing.
