Careers, Development & Higher Education Department

Hutchesons’ CDHE team consists of four multi-disciplinary members of staff under the overall stewardship of our Senior Depute Rector. Our CDHE team introduce careers and possible job options to S1 pupils right through to supporting S6 pupils as they continue on into tertiary education, apprenticeships, gap years or employment.

Supporting every pupil’s pathway

The guidance our CDHE team provides is invaluable. Through dedicated parent information evenings, departmental presentations and individual consultations, pupils receive tailored advice from experienced staff who understand their aspirations, strengths and ambitions.

Subject choice is approached as a personalised process. Pupils in S2, S4 and S5 meet individually with members of the CDHE or House Teams to discuss their interests, future plans and the opportunities available to them. Pupils requiring additional learning support receive dedicated guidance from their House Learning Support Coordinator. These conversations allow bespoke timetables that reflect each pupil’s goals, with almost all pupils able to study their preferred combination of subjects.

Future Ready

The School’s commitment to preparing pupils for life beyond Hutchesons’ is reflected in a comprehensive programme of careers education and higher education guidance. During National Careers Week, pupils engage with professionals from a range of sectors, gaining valuable insight into different career journeys and the decisions that shape them. We also actively promote alternative pathways, including Graduate Apprenticeships, recognising the growing opportunities for pupils to combine academic study with professional experience.

For senior pupils progressing to university, the CDHE team provides outstanding support throughout the UCAS process. Every S6 pupil is allocated a tutor who guides them through their application, supported by detailed reviews, individual advice and interview preparation. Applicants for competitive courses, including medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, benefit from specialist mock interviews and Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) preparation. Pupils choosing alternative routes beyond school are equally supported, with guidance tailored to their individual ambitions.

Our annual Higher Education Fair brings together representatives from universities and leading apprenticeship providers, giving pupils and families direct access to expert advice on the opportunities available to them.

Through personalised guidance, extensive networks and a deep understanding of each pupil, the CDHE team provides a sector-leading service that ensures every young person leaves Hutchesons’ with the confidence, knowledge and support to pursue the pathway that is right for them.

Leaver’s Destinations

Our pupils regularly go on to study at the best universities. The vast majority of our S6 leavers in 2025 once again secured a university place with 87% of pupils being accepted to their first choice. Seven pupils were accepted to the University of St Andrews, whilst forty-two pupils entered other Russell Group Universities.
