Physical Education & Sport
All pupils are given as much variety as possible in terms of team and individual sports.
P1 to P3
Lower primary classes have two periods of PE each week. This time is spent either in the gym, where pupils are involved in activities such as dance or gymnastics, or the hall, where the emphasis is placed on games and the development of spatial awareness and hand-eye co-ordination.
P4 and P5
Primary 4 and 5 have four periods of PE each week. This comprises a double period of gymnastics or ball skills and a double period of games. Both year groups are also timetabled for swimming on a rota
basis. Emphasis is focused on skills development and no inter-school matches in any sports are played at these stages.
P6 and P7
In P6 and 7 the pupils have two double periods ofPE. This time is spent on sports traditional to Hutchesons’ including hockey, rugby, cricket and tennis. They also enjoy ball games such as volleyball, basketball and netball. As in Primary 4 and 5, time is used for swimming blocks during the winter months. Pupils in Primary 6 and 7 also
have the opportunity to participate in co-curricular activities such as curling and dance.
Competitive matches in athletics, hockey, cross-country, swimming, rugby and cricket are introduced at the Primary 6 and 7 stages.
