Archive Photo of The Month – February

This month, we’re taking a closer look at something often overlooked in our school magazines, the adverts.

They reveal fascinating glimpses of changing school fashions, uniform suppliers, and even humour over the years. Many former pupils remember trips with their mothers to outfitters to get ready for the new school year.

Interestingly, some outfitters even appear in school minutes, one was caught illegally selling Hutchie branded uniforms, prompting intervention from the Lord Lyon.

School uniforms have always been a core part of our identity. These ads bring back memories of the infamous hats, tunics, skirts that gradually shortened over the years, and colourful summer dresses.

While some elements were loved, others were quickly discarded, like the tradition of tossing hats into the Clyde on the last day of school. Many former pupils still cherish their blazers and scarves, keeping a tangible link to their school days.

School Archive:

Committed to the collection, preservation and maintenance of the records of the school, its activities and pupils, the School strives to record the school’s history and memory and hold a range of archive material from class registers and magazines to photographs, trophies and uniforms. Pupils are encouraged at both Primary and Secondary School to engage with archive material, with the aim to provide a dynamic educational resource for the school and wider community.

Would you like to know more about the School’s History? Contact our School Archivist, Ms Devenney at archives@hutchesons.org with any enquiries.
