P7’s Aid Website

P7 pupil Kaan has built an informative website to help signpost people to local Turkish and Syrian aid groups working on the ground following the devastating earthquakes in the region.

Kaan was moved to act after watching live TV reports of the humanitarian crisis which has affected 23 million people.

The website, which went live earlier this week, gives details of aid organisations based in the areas worst affected by the earthquakes.

Kaan’s parents are both Turkish and he spends most holidays in Turkiye visiting family. Kaan said:

My relatives live in the north of the country and are safe, but I felt I should do something to help. I thought I could make a web page highlighting the ways in which people could donate or help.

My uncle in Datça helped me identify the aid organisations who are on the ground giving immediate help and I had built a website before in ICT lessons, so I knew a little bit about html.

Kaan’s mum, who is a Professor at Glasgow University, added:

We worked with the Turkish Embassy to help Kaan define some collection points before he posted them on his website.

The University of Glasgow has shared a link to the website amongst its staff and other universities in Scotland have indicated they will also share the information with their academics.

Head of Upper Primary, Mrs Gibson, said:

“We are very proud of the initiative Kaan has shown creating this website and he is displaying one of our core school values of compassion. We hope his website is seen by many are helps raise of awareness of how people can help.”
