The event is organised jointly by the Careers department and the Hutchesons’ Grammar School Parents’ Association. The involvement of the HGSPA in contacting consultants makes the whole event possible.
Pupils had the chance to speak to up to six consultants and get information about potential careers after school; valuable information as they consider their subject choices for next year.
The pupils in attendance found the convention to be very helpful in many ways as Katie, Saad and Prerana highlight;
S4 pupil Karie said: “The evening was very useful as I was able to speak to people who currently work in the careers that I am interested in. I spoke to a lovely lady who works in marketing and advertising and she has inspired me to look into this profession more. I really enjoyed the evening and it helped me to look in the right direction for my future career path.”
Saad explained how much he benefitted from the evening, he said: “The Careers convention allowed me to develop a better understanding of my chosen careers and I learned how important certain skills such as teamwork were. I’ve also realised that I need to become more organised if I am to be successful in the future.”
Prerana added: “I have learned that there is so much more depth to every job than I thought there was – especially Genetics (which I thought was about working in labs and looking at different slides, but actuall, you are also able to consult patients and teach students as well). One of the options that I put down was Law. I found out that it was much broader and varied than I thought, with many different branches of which will suit different kinds of people. The careers evening helped me to find a better outlook on diverse careers that I had very different expectations for.”
