The special Talking Points Lecture was opened by senior pupil Arun Uttamchandani (S5), who welcomed Ms Murray to Hutchesons’ and highlighted her fantastic sporting achievements to special guests, staff and pupils.
Judy spoke about her tennis coaching career and the difficulties she had encountered in a largely male-dominated field and her work to ensure more women receive a platform to get involved.
She said: “When you bring woman together, we network and share. Like snowflakes, if we work in isolation, which often happens with tennis coaches, we float around, eventually hit something and disappear. However, when snowflakes band together, like us women do, we form snowballs and snowballs and make an impact.
“What I am trying to do is create a bigger and stronger female workforce in the world of tennis across the UK so we can break that glass ceiling of a male-dominated sport so that we can have many more women sitting on top of the world in tennis.
“My message is that there is talent everywhere although not all talent has the opportunity to develop. You have wonderful opportunities to enjoy sport because you have a fantastic school with great facilities and tremendous teachers. You have the opportunity and it is down to you to work hard and to maximize that talent.”
She also spoke about her tennis champion sons Andy and Jamie and their different careers on the tennis circuit. At the end there was an opportunity to ask lots of questions and our senior pupils learned that success happens through working well as a team.
