This entrance was formerly the ‘junior’ entrance when the school was first opened and the
stones came from the old school in Crown Street.
Many of the former boys don’t have a strong recollection of these stones, as at the time they were set up high in the building’s stonework. The stones commemorate the dates that our founders died, George in 1639 and Thomas in 1641. The sun, boar’s head, arrows, book of learning and motto are still all featured.
Crown Street was built in 1841 on Hospital lands, in Hutchesontown. Designed by Robert Craig, it was T-shaped in design and boasted something new then, a playground. These stones, almost 200 years old, have witnessed thousands of pupils pass through our doors, and continue to this day.
Committed to the collection, preservation and maintenance of the records of the school, its activities and pupils, the School strives to record the school’s history and memory and hold a range of archive material from class registers and magazines to photographs, trophies and uniforms. Pupils are encouraged at both Primary and Secondary School to engage with archive material, with the aim to provide a dynamic educational resource for the school and wider community.
