Book Week & World Book Day 2023

Book Week arrived at Kingarth Street to celebrate reading and World Book Day.

To kick off the activities for Book Week, parents and carers were invited to the Primary School for a special Books at Bedtime event in the library. Getting comfortable while dressed in their pyjamas and under their favourite blanket, our Primary 2 pupils enjoyed listening to stories from Mr Cornfoot, Mrs Wilson, and our Primary 2 Teachers. Children had the opportunity to read together by torchlight, and milk and cookies were on hand to make it the perfect bedtime treat.

A whole school reading challenge also got under way with pupils reading as many books as they could across the week. Their Bookcase of Dreams chart shared the variety of books finished from The Witches to Gangster Granny, and Roller Girl to World’s Worst Parents, and many more in-between.

Lunchtime workshops took place to create your own comic strip as well as craft workshops to make superhero masks. Children took their artistic talents to the next level with wonderful designs and stories.

Ron and Fergus, aka Macastory, welcomed our Pre-Schoolers and Primary 1’s into the library for a fun and energetic storytelling activity. Armed with their guitar and a bag full of surprises, they had pupils in hysterics. Many were still humming the “hear a story” tune all the way back to class. Our Primary 2’s also had the opportunity to join in the fun as they took part in the lively storytelling as Fergus recounted Thor’s Wedding Day – very apt as pupils have just started their Viking topic.

World Book Day took place on the Thursday and Kingarth Street filled with an array of colourful costumes. Pupils and staff came dressed as their favourite character and there was a wonderful buzz around the corridors. A parade of costumes took place at assembly and our best-dressed were awarded their certificates in front of their peers.

The Secondary School also joined in World Book Day by taking part in a Reading Lunch in the library, organised by our Secondary School Librarian, Mrs Denham. Pupils and staff sat peacefully amongst each other and enjoyed the quiet time, their lunch, and a good book.

The fun didn’t stop there, children’s Author and Illustrator, Morag Hood also came to visit the Primary School and read not one, not two, but three of her books to the children’s delight – I am Bat, Dig Dig Digger, and The Steves. Morag shared her secrets on how she draws her book illustrations before pupils then had the opportunity to draw their very own digger and ask Morag first-hand any questions they had. Finishing off with a book signing, pupils eagerly lined up to receive their signed book and thank Morag for her time.

Throughout the week Ms Peebles, our Primary School Librarian, set up challenges by taking inspiration from Oi Frog for the children to decipher and earn extra house points. Then before we knew it, Friday came around with the Book Sale, and with that brought the end of another wonderful Book Week.

Well done everyone – terrific effort.
