School Captains 2026

Looking at a Girls’ Primary 1 class photograph from 1933, we recreated it with some of our newest Primary 1 children – almost 100 years later. Although the uniforms and hairstyles firmly place the image in another era, the children’s expressions feel wonderfully familiar. There are bright smiles, a few serious faces as pupils wonder what their first day at school might have in store.
The archive photograph was taken a few years before the outbreak of the Second World War. Like many Hutchesons’ pupils of the time, several of the girls pictured here would later be evacuated to Sanquhar. Their school experience would be shaped by events far beyond the classroom, and we are fortunate to hold some of their stories in the school archive, preserving an important chapter in the history of Hutchesons’.
We extend a very warm welcome to all of our new pupils, especially those joining Primary 1 as they start their Hutchesons’ journey.
Committed to the collection, preservation and maintenance of the records of the school, its activities and pupils, our archives hold a range of material from class registers and magazines to photographs, trophies and uniforms. Pupils are encouraged at both Primary and Secondary to engage with archive material, with the aim to provide a dynamic educational resource for pupils and our wider community.
