Prefect badges are usually round, oblong or in the shape of a shield and typically quite plain, but as shown below, that’s not the case for this one, which is a mini replica of the school’s coat of arms. Looking at the safety pin, this gives a guide of how small this prefect badge is.
Pupils who received this prefect badge, said they were so proud to wear it. The badge is made from metal and is slightly heavy considering its size, which is perhaps why it has an extra pin with a chain to help it stay in place. Pupils were afraid to lose it, and many former pupils speak fondly and proudly about being a prefect at the school.
The exact date is unknown when prefects were introduced at the school, but the School Archive have this great image from 1954 of the ‘Prefects’ Novelty Race’, confirming that prefects have been an important part of the school for many years.
Committed to the collection, preservation and maintenance of the records of the school, its activities and pupils, the School strives to record the school’s history and memory and hold a range of archive material from class registers and magazines to photographs, trophies and uniforms. Pupils are encouraged at both Primary and Secondary School to engage with archive material, with the aim to provide a dynamic educational resource for the school and wider community.
