Archive Photo of the Month – April

As part of our celebrations for our 150th Anniversary of girls’ education at Hutchesons’. This month, we look at the first girls’ School gymnasium.

The featured image showcases the gymnasium, originally built in 1912. At the time, it represented a significant development for the girls’ school, providing its first dedicated space for physical education. The gymnasium was thoughtfully designed, including a gallery positioned overlooking the space.

Over time, this gallery was enclosed and repurposed as a sewing room. Many former pupils remember it fondly as Miss Crockett’s classroom.

The photograph itself reveals intriguing details, including gymnastic ropes visible on the left-hand side, which hint at the active, engaging environment pupils once enjoyed.

School Archive:

Committed to the collection, preservation and maintenance of the records of the school, its activities and pupils, our archives hold a range of material from class registers and magazines to photographs, trophies and uniforms. Pupils are encouraged at both Primary and Secondary to engage with archive material, with the aim to provide a dynamic educational resource for pupils and our wider community.
