In 1946, the Girls’ School celebrated its 70th Anniversary and commemorated the date with an anniversary magazine. Jessie M King, who is believed to have been a former teacher, submitted a print for inclusion in the magazine. Her illustration, along with its metal etching fixed onto a wooden block, was found in the School’s Art department and is an important piece of Hutchie and Glasgow art history.
Jessie M. King was a Scottish illustrator known for her illustrated children’s books. She also had a vast design portfolio including bookplates, jewellery, fabric, and painted pottery. She was one of the artists known as the ‘Glasgow Girls’ and was described in 1927 as “the pioneer of batik in Great Britain”.
Committed to the collection, preservation and maintenance of the records of the school, its activities and pupils, the School strives to record the school’s history and memory and hold a range of archive material from class registers and magazines to photographs, trophies and uniforms. Pupils are encouraged at both Primary and Secondary School to engage with archive material, with the aim to provide a dynamic educational resource for the school and wider community.
