Best in Scotland – Hutchesons’ Pupil Excels in UK Mathematics Trust Olympiad

Congratulations to Ayyan (S4), who has been awarded ‘Best in Scotland’ in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad.

Ayyan achieved a silver medal in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Olympiad, in addition to securing the top ranking in Scotland. This is the most challenging mathematics competition for S4 pupils, open only to pupils who are the top performers in the initial Intermediate Challenge, with around 500 pupils across the whole of the UK taking part.

The Olympiad encourages pupils to explore beyond standard school maths, requiring them to solve complex problems and present full written solutions. The competition helps develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills, while giving pupils a taste of the kind of mathematics studied at the highest levels.

In addition, Ayyan has recently scored full marks in the Senior section of the Scottish Mathematical Challenge. Pupils in S4 would typically enter the middle section of the competition; however, Ayyan chose to take on a more significant challenge, entering the section normally only attempted in S5 or S6.

Dr Kilgour of the Mathematics Department commented:

“We are very proud of all Ayyan’s hard work in Mathematics. He is a highly talented mathematician with a true passion for the subject. He is also a true mathematical inspiration to all those who enjoy Mathematics at Hutchesons’ Grammar School. We wish Ayyan all the very best as he continues his mathematical adventure.”

This achievement reflects both Ayyan’s talent and dedication, as well as the strength of the Mathematics Department here at Hutchesons’ Grammar School. Congratulations also go to all pupils who participated in the UK Mathematics Trust competitions this year.
