Mass of Children Concert

Music pupils and staff delivered a wonderful concert to the school community last week, with John Rutter’s Mass of the Children and music from the School Choirs, Festival Wind Band, String Collective and Orchestra.

The concert held on Thursday, November 29th was held in the Helen and Walter Ross Assembly Hall and began with the Festival Wind Band playing a collection of music.

The performance included an impressive solo from S6 pupil Claudia playing ‘Cinema Paradiso’ by Robert Longfield.

Following this, the String Collective had everyone tapping their toes, performing traditional Scottish ballads, including ‘Smokin’ in the Kitchen’ and ‘On the Wings of Skoria’.

The Sinfonia group then delivered a heartfelt performance, ending the first part of the evening by playing ‘Fanfare from Rondeau’ and ‘Dance of the Tumblers’.

Following the interval, the Mass of Children concert took place, with John Rutter’s work performed by pupils and staff, led by Head of Music Performance, Mr Walton.

John Rutter is an English composer and conductor with a strong reputation for his choral music. His larger works, Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, The Gift of Life and Visions have been widely performed around the world. Mass of Children was written and first performed in 2003 and is a setting of the traditional Latin Mass text.

The performance included the Senior Choir, members of staff, the Intermediate Choir, the Primary Junior Chorus, Soloists and Staff Chamber Ensemble.

Solo singers on the evening were S5 pupils, Megan (Soprano) and Robbie (Baritone).

The show included five movements including Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Angus Dei and the finale, Dona Nobis Pacem.

The Hutchie charity committee would like to thank everyone who gave so generously on the night – they raised £302.35 for our 2018/19 Headline Charity, Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance.
