Eco-Committee visit to The Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre

The Kingarth Street Eco-Committee enjoyed a fascinating and informative visit to the Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre to find out what happens to the waste we produce at home and at school.

In Glasgow, waste from green bins would fill George Square to the height of the spire on the City Chambers building three times each year and the pupils enjoyed learning about the work at the GRREC.

They learned that the first step is taking out materials that can be recycled such as bottles, paper, cardboard and glass. Then food waste is taken out and used to create a gas using an anaerobic digestion process. Finally the remaining waste is heated to produce electricity.
After these three processes only 10% of the waste remains in the form of ash which can be used as an aggregate for building.

A lot was learned on the day and the pupils are looking forward to sharing what they have discovered with the rest of the Primary School.
