Scottish Parliament Trip

Written by S5 pupil Jessica.

On the 31st January, Higher Modern Studies pupils visited the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.

After arriving, we were immediately struck by the impressive architecture nestled in the heart of Edinburgh, framed by the backdrop of the scenic mountains.

Shortly after, we went into the Educational room and took part in a few interactive activities such as discussing the work of the parliament and parliamentary procedures. We even got to participate in creating a mock bill whereby we discussed amendments to voting and debated compulsory voting.

As outside grew louder, we made our way up to the seating area to watch First Ministers Questions – the main event that we were all anticipating.

We sat at the front of the viewing area, and we got an amazing view of the layout of the parliament and could see all the familiar faces of the MSPs we had discussed in class over the years.

The whole debate was incredible, and it was especially busy that day as they were discussing the Budget. The atmosphere was electric, with the banging of hands on desks adding to that. It was great to experience what FMQ is really like, and I am sure we all found it very useful.

While enjoying lunch, we were fortunate to meet former Labour leader Johann Lamont and Labour MSP and former pupil, Anas Sarwar, who answered any questions we had and gave us a true insight into the work of an MSP, which was very interesting and kind of them.

Overall, the trip was amazing and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
